Penn State missed four field goals and an extra point, and despite causing four turnovers, lost to Virginia 17-16 on Saturday in Charlottesville.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--It wasn't all on the kicker.

When Penn State travels to face Virginia on Saturday, a former walk-on quarterback will lineup behind center and likely hand off to a former walk-on running back. And if Penn State's season opener against Ohio was any indication, a former walk-on tight end could be getting some looks in the passing game, too.

With that in mind, coach Bill O'Brien thinks it's probably time to change their moniker.

Ohio scored 21 unanswered points in the second-half, including a game-clinching touchdown on a seven-minute, 14-play, 93-yard drive with 2:55 remaining to upset Penn State 24-14 at Beaver Stadium on Saturday.

Putting an end to the most tumultuous offseason in program history, Penn State coach Bill O'Brien finally led the Lions back onto the football field.

Following the most tumultuous offseason in the history of Penn State football, quarterback Matt McGloin has a clear picture of his team's mission in 2012.

"We definitely have a chance to make history here at Penn State," McGloin said.

In the continuing fallout from the shocking child sex abuse scandal at Penn State, it seems insensitive to call any challenges the Nittany Lions will face between the lines this season "problems."

Nevertheless, Penn State will have to sort out a number of depth issues if it's to finish atop the Big Ten Leaders Division in 2012.

Two starters, several back-ups among those to leave so far

When 6-foot-5 former Penn State volleyball star Blair Brown went club-hopping a while back with 6-4 Nebraska All-American Brooke Delano and three other very tall young women, they weren’t exactly shy about their height.

All five wore three-inch heels.

“We would have worn six-inch heels if we had them,” Delano said with a laugh. “We got some comments about our long legs, and we loved it.”

It’s interesting that NOW there is outrage in State College about actions that are “unfair to the kids.” The harsh NCAA sanctions against the Penn State football program are indeed unfair to the student-athletes.

They had absolutely nothing to do with Jerry Sandusky’s crimes or the massive, 14-year-long cover-up perpetrated by those in charge of the university. The sanctions are extremely unfair.<
