Ron Everhart defied the odds and turned Duquesne basketball into a respectable program. But after five years he was dismissed and the Dukes' short-lived success came to a screeching halt.

It has been more than four years since Ron Everhart was terminated as the basketball coach at Duquesne, despite having more success than any coach in 30 years at the program.

Three WPIAL players were drafted into the NFL this past weekend. Former Pitt wide receiver and Clairton standout Tyler Boyd was the first local player off the board when the Cincinnati Bengals made him their second round pick on Friday night.

Scouts love Boyd’s competitiveness, route-running ability and hands, which make up for his lack of elite speed.

Despite their fourth tournament win in the past four decades, the arrow is not yet pointing up for Duquesne.

Yes, Duquesne won Wednesday night in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational, but it’s hardly a cause for celebration. Not yet.
