The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Thursday that Sidney Crosby had successful surgery on a core muscle injury – according to team vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford - that knocked the star center out of the third period of last week’s home win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The surgery, which has a minimum six weeks recovery time, was performed by Dr. William Meyers of the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia.

Crosby, who leads the team in scoring with 12 assists and 17 points in 17 games this season, has played in at least 75 games in each of the past six years.
