Rhode Island defeats Duquesne 90-69

Hassan Martin scored 20 points and E.C. Matthews added 19 to lead Rhode Island to a 90-69 win over Duquesne at Palumbo Center.

Kuran Iverson had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Rams, who have won eight in a row over Duquesne in Pittsburgh.

Mike Lewis II and Tarin Smith led the Dukes, who lost their third-straight, with 11 points each. Lewis extended his streak of double-digit scoring games to 14. Eric James came off the bench to post a season-high 9 rebounds in 19 minutes. Jordan Robinson also scored a season-high 9 points in 18 minutes off the bench.

The Rams, who shot 48.4 percent, turned it over just four times on the afternoon. Rhode Island didn't turn it over until the 14:56 mark of the second half. Duquesne, which shot 39.7 percent, finished with 14 turnovers.

Rhode Island outscored Duquesne 50-26 in the paint.

DU cut a 10-point Rhode Island lead to five on a pair of Lewis II free throws with 2:20 left in the first half. Rhody answered with five consecutive points - including a deep 3-pointer from Matthews, who had 11 in the opening 20 minutes - to take a 41-31 halftime lead.

URI got eight quick points from Martin, who had 17 in the second half, to complete a 13-0 run that built an 18-point lead just over three minutes into the second half.

The URI lead reached a game-high 30 points with just over five minutes remaining.

Rhode Island outshot DU 51.7 percent to 39.4 percent and outscored the Dukes 49-38 in the second half.

Duquesne heads to Davidson for the first of back-to-back road games on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. (TWC Sports - Davidson viewing area/Facebook Live) - please note start time change. The Davidson game begins a stretch of four of five on the road for the Dukes.
