
Penn State pulls away to beat Morgan State in opener

D.J. Newbill led the way for Penn State as the Nittany Lions opened the season with a 61-48 win over Morgan State on Friday
Newbill led three Nittany Lions in double figures with 17 points, while freshman Shep Garner added 14 and sophomore Geno Thorpe scored 11 for Penn State.
Morgan State led for most of the first half, but the Bears shot just 31 percent from the floor, including 3 of 18 from 3-point range, and Penn State pulled away for a comfortable win. The Nittany Lions did not let the advantage dip below 10 in the second half.
The Bears were led by Cedric Blossom's 10 points and Blake Bozeman's 9.
Newbill also pulled down seven rebounds for Penn State. Sophomore Brandon Taylor led the Lions with nine.
Next up, Penn State welcomes Fordham to the court Sunday, Nov. 16. Tip time is set for 5:06 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center.
