The Pitt Panthers basketball team received an early commitment from Philadelphia point guard John Johnson on Thursday. The 6’1”, 164-pound Johnson chose Pitt over verbal offers from Notre Dame, Villanova, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Penn State, St. Joseph’s and Drexel.
Whether the commitment sticks is up for debate, as Johnson cannot sign anything binding until a year from this coming November.
Pitt has received several early commitments from sophomore players in recent years, including former Jeannette star and current Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor. None of the sophomore commitments to Pitt have gone on to attend the school.
