If fans of the Ohio State football program needed some good news amidst all the turmoil, they didn't get it from Terrelle Pryor. The Buckeye quarterback announced that he is entering the NFL's July supplemental draft. Pryor faced a five-game suspension, along with the anger of Buckeye fans, had he returned for his senior season.

With the dog days of summer upon us, football fans are usually anxiously awaiting the opening of training camp. But this summer is different as the NFL is in the midst of its longest work stoppage since 1987.

While the NFL’s labor dispute might be solved in time for a full season of play, the shadow of the offseason lockout will undoubtedly linger over the crop of rookies making their entrances into the league. These young talents have been drafted and yet are unable to work out with their new team or meet with their new coaches. Many have yet to receive a playbook.

In 2003, there was the “Rooney Rule” named after Dan Rooney’s commitment to giving management opportunities to African-Americans. Then in 2009 came the so-called “Hines Ward Rule” that penalized blindside blocks to an opponent’s head.

For hopeful draftees, the NFL Draft brings out a plethora of emotions. The three day event, which takes place annually at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, can be just as invigorating as heartbreaking. There are no guarantees; no one--not an agent, not a coach, not an analyst--is an expert. For many late-round picks, the wait can make a player feel more helpless than they’ve ever felt on a football field.

“Somebody needs to tell Rashard to lay off the Twitter for a bit.” That was the text that PSR contributing writer Anthony Jaskulski sent to me earlier this month, shortly after hearing the the news about Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall and his less-than-well-thought-out posts on the social media website Twitter.

Kevin Colbert called the Steelers’ drafting of Ohio State defensive end Cameron Heyward “a special moment for this organization.” Hmm… Right up there with any of the six Super Bowl championships? Wasn’t picking Joe Greene in 1969 special? Terry Bradshaw, a year later?

Cameron Heyward was the Steelers first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft last Thursday night. A defensive end out of Ohio State, the 6-5, 290-pound Heyward is the son of the late Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, a former All-American at Pitt and longtime NFL running back. The newest Steeler met with the press over the weekend.
