The performance of the first-team defense--and offense--doesn’t mean much at this point. The poor showing Friday night was a veteran team looking to play a meaningless game without getting injured. Ike Taylor’s thumb injury could lead to more of a self-preservation style of play in the next two games.

Rex Grossman completed 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and a TD as the Washington Redskins dominated the Steelers, racking up 452 yards to Pittsburgh's 186 in a dominant 16-7 win Friday night in the preseason opener for both teams. Steelers corner Ike Taylor suffered a broken thumb in the loss.

Baron Batch’s unfortunate ACL tear earlier this week ended the rookie’s impressive showing at training camp and robbed Steeler Nation of one of its primary attractions in Friday’s preseason opener. Batch won’t have the chance to translate that buzz to game action, but these others will.

Rookie running back Baron Batch has been the star of training camp thus far. Perhaps he hasn't quite reached fan favorite status and earned a nickname the way Isaac “Redzone” Redman did last year, but he’s gained the attention of the one man who counts the most: Mike Tomlin.

The Cincinnati Bengals have been nothing if not inconsistent, going from four wins in 2008, to ten in 2009 then back down to four last year. What has been unfortunately consistent for the team is the habit of its players getting into trouble with the law.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take the field for the first time this September, they’ll be featuring a linebacking corps that is among the NFL’s best. That shouldn’t be a surprise, as that particular group has forced its way into the league elite since the 1970’s.
