Senior defensive end and Hendricks Award candidate among seven Panthers named to All-Big East Team

University of Pittsburgh senior defensive end Jabaal Sheard added to his lengthy list of postseason honors today when he was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year by league coaches.

The news broke late this afternoon that Dave Wannstedt has resigned as head coach of the University of Pittsburgh football team. And by now, most know that the tag “resignation” is a nicer way of saying “you're fired.”

However it's phrased, the Pitt football program will be undergoing a search for a new coach, and the current players on the team are not pleased about it.

The University of Pittsburgh will part ways with head coach Dave Wannstedt after a disappointing 7-5 season. Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said at a press conference that Wannstedt, 42-31 over six seasons, resigned Tuesday afternoon.

He will remain at Pitt in the capacity of special assistant to the athletic director.

Pitt sophomore running back Dion Lewis has been named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Panthers’ 28-10 victory over Cincinnati this past weekend.

The Panthers will cap a disappointing season with a Jan. 8 game at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama against SEC opponent Kentucky.

The University of Pittsburgh today accepted an invitation to play in the 2011 BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., it was announced by the bowl’s officials.

Pitt defensive end Jabaal Sheard and Penn State guard Stefen Wisniewski have been named to the 25-player All-America Team selected by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

Wisniewski is the 78th first-team All-American under coach Joe Paterno. The 6-3, 306-pound Central Catholic grad, is one of five Big Ten playes on the first unit.

Brandon Hogan's interception and fumble recovery led to touchdowns in the first half, Geno Smith threw two scoring passes to Tavon Austin after halftime and West Virginia smacked Pitt 35-10 on Friday.

After enduring plenty of trials, Pitt senior offensive tackle Jason Pinkston has emerged on the other side and is on the brink of realizing his dreams.

If character is truly built through adversity, then Pitt left tackle Jason Pinkston has enough for an entire offensive line.
