Pinch-hitter Derek Dietrich connected for a three-run homer in the seventh inning Thursday, and Bell went against the book while closing out a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in his first game as manager.

Unexpected stars, unconventional moves, one pleasing win.

David Freese went 3-for-3, knocking in all five runs for the Pirates, including the walk off single with bases loaded in the ninth inning in the 5-4 victory over New York Friday night at PNC Park.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Michael Wacha lost a no-hit bid in the ninth inning when pinch-hitter Colin Moran led off with a single, leaving to a huge ovation and pitching the St. Louis Cardinals past the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 Sunday.

The Pirates’ bullpen continued to struggle Tuesday, blowing another late lead in an 8-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

PITTSBURGH (AP) —Anthony Rizzo's seventh home run of the season gave the sleep-deprived Chicago Cubs an early lead on Monday afternoon. His two-run single in the ninth put the finishing touches on a 7-0 romp over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It's what happened in between that could have a carry-over effect for the NL Central rivals.

Jameson Taillon got a much needed quality start Sunday, but the Pirates’ bullpen cost him the win, and ultimately, the game, losing 6-4 to drop the series to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Leading 4-3 in the eighth, reliever Michael Feliz got himself into trouble immediately with a bloop single and two walks to open the inning.

Starling Marte homered in his first at-bat back from the disabled list, but the Pirates could not generate any offense besides that, losing 4-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday afternoon.

Marte’s first inning moonshot over the center field bullpens should put any doubts that the right oblique that landed him on the 10 day DL is feeling better.

Joe Musgrove was nothing short of spectacular in his Pirates debut, throwing even shutout innings and scoring the game-winning run in an 8-1 win over the Cardinals.

Musgrove appeared to be in the Pirates’ rotation out of spring training, but a shoulder injury shortly before his first scheduled start forced him onto the disabled list.
