Football fans tend to think of a great game in terms of a close game – a game in which the outcome is in doubt until the final minute, a contest where winner and loser are defined by a single play.

Sometimes, however, a great game can mean a game in which the combatants play the game at a high level. Great football players can make for a great football game.

One week left in the 2014 WPIAL regular season. One week left for teams to prove they’re ready for the playoffs.

For the team sitting atop the AAAA Quad Southeastern conference, the Woodland Hills Wolverines, there is not much left to prove. But there is a whole lot left to play for.

Clairton sophomore Lamont Wade ran for 272 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries as the Bears routed Monessen 60-0 in the teams' first game since Monessen snapped Clairton's 66-game winning streak a year ago.

Although Clairton once again ran away with a big victory, the game was played at an intense level from the time the two teams took the field.

Monessen (4-3) is fresh off a 52-22 loss to Jeanette and will need a win against either Clairton (7-0) or Springdale (4-3) to return to the WPIAL playoffs.

Unfortunately for the young Greyhounds, Clairton has pummeled all of their opponents thus far.

There is no shortage of great athletes to come out of the Mon-Valley, but perhaps no single institution has produced more great athletes than old Donora High School (now part of Ringgold). The WPIAL Hall of Fame has recognized the following Donora greats.

Some teams don’t rebuild, they reload. Clairton is one of those teams.

The Bears are once again undefeated this season, something they grew accustomed to during a prolific 66-game win streak that came to an end last season.

When the Penguins hired Jim Rutherford as their general manager in 2014, it seemed like a temporary move. The former Carolina Hurricanes GM would spend his two years in Pittsburgh, and then hand the keys to Jason Botterill; the man whom several people thought deserved the job in the first place.
