In an area rife with great football rivalries, one of the best will unfold at the Wolvarena in Churchill Friday night when Pittsburgh Central Catholic, ranked No. 1 in the state, takes on a Woodland Hills team currently on the rise.

Both teams, almost always the leaders in the Big East Conference, are undefeated this season and both are loaded with top-flight talent.

After returning 13 starters—including one of the WPIAL's most productive running backs in senior Luke Hagy—from a squad that went undefeated in the regular season a year ago, the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils entered 2011 with some lofty goals.

And after whipping Pine-Richland 34-7—behind 242 yards and 5 touchdowns from Hagy—it appeared as though they were right on schedule.

Too often, games that look like great match-ups on paper fail to live up to the hype. But the Montour-Hopewell match-up at Tony Dorsett Stadium on Friday night didn't merely live up to the hype, it surpassed any and all expectations.

Montour came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, driving to the Hopewell 17 before a turnover on a muffed snap ended their opening drive

For the past three-plus seasons, every team on Hopewell's schedule has had one thing in common: they've all spent the week prior to the game devising a way to stop Vikings superstar Rushel Shell.

This week, however, Hopewell coach Dave Vestal finds himself in his opponents' shoes.

Junior quarterback Mack Leftwich connected on his first pass of the night, a scoring strike to receiver Brendon Conniker, and North Allegheny demolished State College in a 53-21 romp on Friday, an impressive start to the Tigers' defense of their state championship from a year ago.

State College quarterback Josh Weakland answered, leading the Lions on an 80-yard drive with 5-for-5 passing, capped by a Jack

They say that familiarity breeds contempt, and you'd be hard-pressed to find two teams more familiar with each other than North Allegheny and State College. The two perennial quad-A powers will meet for the third time in the past year when they open the 2011 season at Newman Stadium in Wexford on Friday night.

The Tigers and Lions opened the 2010 season in the exact same location, with North Allegheny breezing to a 42-7 win.

Pennsylvania—particularly western PA—has always been a hotbed for football talent, and the class of 2012 looks to continue that trend. Any discussion of this year’s class begins with Hopewell’s Rushel Shell, a running back who has put up remarkable numbers since his freshman year.

The 5’11”, 215-pounder has rushed for nearly 6,800 yards and 76 touchdowns during his career at Hopewell, and could become Pennsylvania’s
