Big East Preview

Best team: Pitt - With three All-America candidates, including Heisman hopeful Dion Lewis, and the potential for a high-powered offense, the Panthers are primed to take the conference after falling in the de facto championship game last season against Cincinnati.

Best offensive player: Noel Devine, RB, West Virginia

It’s a toss-up with Pitt’s Lewis, but Devine will be the center of West Virginia’s offense this season as he looks to improve on 1,465 rushing yards and 13 TDs in order to make his last season at West Virginia his best yet.

Best defensive player: Greg Romeus, DE, Pitt

The Big East’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year in ‘09 and a fixture on pre-season All-America lists, Romeus had 43 tackles last season and is one of the top d-ends in the country.

Best coach: Randy Edsall, Connecticut

Edsall transformed the Huskies from a Division 1-A newcomer seven years ago to a team that went to a bowl game four out of the past six years and should finish near the top of the Big East this season.

Predicted order of finish

  1. Pitt
  2. West Virginia
  3. Cincinnati
  4. Connecticut
  5. Rutgers
  6. South Florida
  7. Louisville
  8. Syracuse

National impact: Pitt

If the Panthers fill the holes left by departed players in one of the nation’s best defenses last season and live up to expectations offensively, they could play with the top teams in the country. However, Pitt will be tested with non-conference games against Utah and Miami (Fl.) and the early challenges should reveal where the Panthers stand on a national level.

There was not much we didn't know about Pitt's Jamie Dixon when this season began. We knew he'd never coached a team to the Final Four. But we also knew he never missed an NCAA Tournament. Nor has he ever lost to a Top 10 team at home.

Steelers president Art Rooney II doesn’t open his mouth often, unless he has a good reason. That’s rare for an attorney, but appropriate for an executive of an NFL team that has been a model of stability and success for most of the past four decades.
