It turned into an emotional night at the 2018 NFL Draft during the Pittsburgh Steelers pick announcement, when Commissioner Roger Goodell introduced Ryan Shazier, who, joined by his fiancee Michelle Rodriguez, made a determined walk to the podium, announcing that his squad had selected Terrell Edmunds.
Shazier, who suffered a spinal cord injury in a game against Indianapolis last year, left much of the crowd in attendance at AT&T Stadium in tears.
The special moment was shared with Edmunds, who was drafted by Buffalo just 12 spots later after his brother Tremaine Edmunds, marking the first time in the NFL draft that brothers were selected in the first round in the same year.
Edmunds, who began his collegiate career as a roving linebacker, and had most recently gained a reputation as a defensive back that can spread the field, often playing close to the line of scrimmage, collected 196 tackles in three seasons at Virginia Tech with six interceptions.
Edmunds closed out his junior season after 10 games due to surgery on his left shoulder, still earning all-ACC third team honors.
Steelers trade Bryant
The Oakland Raiders snuck in between the 19th and 20th picks to take receiver Martavis Bryant from the Steelers in exchange for a third-round (No. 79 overall) pick.
Drafted in 2014, Bryant logged 36-career games with the Steelers, tallying 1,917 receiving yards on 126 receptions with 17 touchdowns.
Bryant went through a tumultuous whirlwind off the field, earning two suspensions for substance-abuse. The wideout created conflict in the locker room, earning a demotion in late-October, when the wideout declared he would not play in a game against Detroit.
Notables
Heisman winner Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) went first overall to the Cleveland Browns, while the Steelers' conference rivals also went fourth, selecting CB Denzel Ward (Ohio St).
Another conference rival also made noise, when Baltimore chose highlight reel quarterback Lamar Jackson (Louisville) with the 32nd and last pick of the first round.
Penn State star running back Saquon Barkley went second overall to the New York Giants. Barkley turned out 3,843 yards rushing and 43 touchdowns in his stellar three-year college career in Happy Valley.
Quarterbacks Sam Darnold (USC), drafted third overall by the New York Jets, Josh Allen (Wyoming) drafted seventh overall by Buffalo and Josh Rosen (UCLA) drafted 10th overall by Arizona joined Mayfield, marking the first time in NFL draft history that four signal-callers were selected in the top ten.
