The Panthers responded from a disappointing effort on Saturday when coach Kevin Stallings benched seniors Jamel Artis and Michael Young in Pitt's 67-42 loss at Virginia. The Panthers led for all but 39 seconds and Artis and Young came through in crunch time to pace the victory.
Young scored 17 points, including a 3-pointer that put the Panthers up 51-49 with four minutes remaining. Then, after a Tadric Jackson jumper tied the game at 51, Artis hit a clutch 3-pointer to put the Panthers up for good. Young also converted a tough layup with 1:07 left to put Pitt up five. The Jackets put up a late rally but Pitt held on for the win, snapping a four-game losing streak.
Artis finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, Sheldon Jeter added 14 and Chris Jones also added 11 for the Panthers (16-16).
Jackson led the Jackets with 17 points. Quinton Stephens added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Georgia Tech (17-15).
The 14th-seeded Panthers (16-16) play sixth-seeded and No. 21 Virginia on Wednesday night at Barclays Center.
