Steelers Free Agents Class of 2016

PSR Logo
The Steelers entered the 2016 offseason with 17 unrestricted free agents including key contributors in the secondary, the linebacking corps and on the offensive line.

Just a few days into the free agent period, the Steelers have re-signed several of their own UFAs and added former San Diego tight end Ladarius Green. Here's a breakdown of the Steelers unrestricted free agents:

Will Allen, S: Allen will be 34 next season and the Steelers will likely move on, especially after signing Robert Golden to a three-year contract.

Kelvin Beachum, OL: The versatile Beachum was on his way to a big pay day before he suffered a torn ACL against Arizona Cardinals this past season. The signing of Ramon Foster probably means the Steelers will let hit the open market. If league interest isn't heavy, however, it's possible that Beachum could come back to a one year “prove it” type deal.

Antwon Blake, CB: Blake had an up but mostly down season in 2015. He had 11 passes defended, 2 interceptions and a sack, but missed 28 tackles according to Pro Football Focus. The team most likely will feel that they can replace him.

Ramon Foster: RE-SIGNED TO 3-YEAR DEAL - Foster has played in 87 regular season games since claiming a starting spot on the team's offensive line. He has been the most durable offensive lineman on the team during that span.

William Gay, CB: RE-SIGNED TO A 3-YEAR DEAL - Gay has been the Steelers most consistent corner since his return from a brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. The Steelers most value his veteran presence and consistency.

Steve McClendon, DT: The Steelers gave up an average of 2.31 yards per rush when McClendon was on the field. He’s valuable in their system and may have a tough time finding a better fit.

Brandon Boykin, CB: Boykin came in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in August but he did not crack the lineup until Week 13. He has value in the open market for teams looking for a nickel or a dime corner.

Robert Golden, S: RE-SIGNED TO 3-YEAR DEAL - Golden is valued by the Steelers due to his contributions on special teams and he has shown to make the most of his opportunities when he is in the lineup on defense. Re-signing their special teams captain was a priority.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR: RE-SIGNED TO 3-YEAR DEAL - Heyward–Bey caught 21 passes for 314 yards and two TDs last season. DHB offers depth and experience to the Steelers receiving corps but he’ll be competing with 2015 third-rounder Sammie Coates next season.

Will Johnson, FB: Johnson’s playing time dipped the past few seasons, but he still has value because he plays both fullback and tight end. Look for the Steelers to try to keep him at the league minimum.

Sean Spence, LB: Spence had been productive as a backup and a starter over the past two seasons after injuries nearly ended his career. Spence will have value to teams looking for linebacker depth.

Cam Thomas, DT: Thomas is nothing more than a depth player at this point in his career and the team wants a less expensive option than the soon to be 30-year-old.

Clifton Geathers, DL: Coaches loved his work ethic but he’s not a priority.Steelers Bruce Gradkowski

Bruce Gradkowski, QB: The local product may be re-signed to get a chance to compete for the backup role in 2016.

Doug Legursky, OL: Probably won’t be retained unless injuries pop up during mini-camps.

Jordan Todman, RB: The Steelers have their top three running backs set with Le’Veon Bell, DeAngeloWilliams and Fitz Toussaint, so his return is doubtful.

Mike Vick, QB: Started three games for the Steelers but was replaced as the backup by Landry Jones. Vick is not likely to be back and may retire for good.

Yipee! Pro Football Focus released their Top 75 Free Agent list, and the Steelers had three players make the unit at differing times.

Josh Bell had not hit a walk-off home run since he was a member of the Altoona Curve in 2015. He changed that Friday with a soaring shot for the left field loonies.
