Tom Sylvester scored two touchdowns as Montour built a 17-6 second half lead and hung on to beat Hopewell 17-15 in a Parkway Conference battle at Thomas J. Burko Memorial Stadium in McKees Rocks on Friday night.

Hopewell scored on the first offensive play from scrimmage as quarterback William DePaul rolled out, tucked the ball away and took off, breaking a pair of tackles before out-running the Montour defense for a 77-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was blocked by Montour.

The Spartans had an immediate answer, however, as Sylvester hauled in a 48-yard pass from Mason Schrenker for his first touchdown of the night to give Montour a 7-6 lead.

Nolan Hutter followed with a 26-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 13-6 for Montour heading into the half.

Sylvester came through with another big play in the third quarter, returning a punt 60 yards for a touchdown to give Montour a 17-6 lead.

Hopewell was not finished, however, as DePaul got outside and sprinted down the sidelines for a 61-yard strike to stun the home crowd and bring Hopewell within 17-12. A pass attempt from DePaul on the two-point conversation attempt failed, however, and the Spartans lead remained at five.

Hopewell’s defense was up to the task, giving the ball back to the offense as time began to become a factor. A stalled drive inside the 10-yard line forced a field goal for the Vikings and cut Montour’s lead to 17-15.
Hopewell vs Montour
Montour took over and drove right down the field, possessing the ball for nearly seven minutes, but Hopewell took over on downs inside their own 5-yard-line.

DePaul led a last-minute drive and the Vikings were threatening, but an interception ended their hopes as they fell to 1-3 on the season.

DePaul finished 11-of-27 in their for 90 yards, and added 173 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 11 attempts.

Brayden Jones led Montour with 100 yards rushing.
