Quarterback Chad Voytik threw for 177 yards and one touchdown to lead Larry Fitzgerald’s Blue Team past Aaron Donald’s Gold Team by the score of 17-10 on Saturday in the 2015 Blue-Gold Spring Game.

“The number one thing is that we came out of this game healthy,” Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said. “Tyler Boyd and James Conner came in a little banged up, but got the reps in early. The big thing is, you come in to the spring game with 14 great days and you want to make sure on the 15th day you just come out of there healthy.”

The game was played in front of an over-capacity crowd of 5,325 fans at Highmark Stadium. In addition to Fitzgerald and Donald, the onlookers included Pitt and NFL greats Jim Covert, Curtis Martin and LeSean McCoy.

“It’s awesome to hear the greats like Curtis Martin and LeSean McCoy mention my name when they were getting interviewed," said Conner. "They know my name. They were saying they want me to carry on the legacy. So that’s what I’m going to try my best to do every day.”

All of the game’s points were scored in first half, while the Blue clinched the game in the final minutes with an interception in the end zone by Jalen Williams to secure the victory.

The majority of Voytik’s yards were thrown to standout wide receiver Tyler Boyd. The Clairton native finished the game with six catches for 112 yards. Team Fitzgerald outgained Team Donald 241 to 223.

Conner had a 2-yard touchdown run that put the Blue ahead, 7-0, in the first quarter. Kicker Chris Blewitt then got the Gold on the board with a booming 55-yard field goal that went straight down the middle.

The Gold then took a 10-7 lead on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Adam Bertke to Zach Challingsworth with 3:21 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Blue took the lead for good with 8:14 to go in the second quarter as Voytik found Eijah Zeise on a 28-yard strike in the corner of the end zone, giving Team Fitz a 14-10 lead. Kicker Joel Reighard added a 28-yard field goal to make it 17-10 with less than a minute remaining in tPitt Larry Fitzgerald Jimbo Covert Aaron Donaldhe half.

Qadree Ollison had a game-high 54 rushing yards for the Blue squad. Challingsworth had four catches for 79 yards and a score to lead the Gold team.

“It felt great having all of the alums and a lot of students, fans, and parents out here supporting us. We just love that feeling just like we’re home and everybody has our back and we have their back.”

Saturday’s game was the 15th and final practice of the spring season. The Panthers open the 2015 campaign at Heinz Field on Sept. 5 against Youngstown State.
