West Virginia snaps skid with big win over Cincinnati

The Mountaineer D frustrated Big East passing leader Zach Collaros, Geno Smith threw four touchdowns and WVU beat Cincinnati 37-10 to get back in the Big East conference chase.

West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith threw four touchdowns and the ground game ran for 245 yards as WVU improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big East after dominating the Cincinnati Bearcats 37-10.  West Virginia scored early and often with quarterback Geno Smith throwing all four of his TDs in the first half.  The Mountaineers went into the half leading 30-3. Noel Devine ran for a touchdown in the third quarter for the final scoring play of the game. Devine and Shawne Alston ran for over 75 yards each.  

OFFENSE

The Mountaineers came out flying early with Geno Smith hooking up with Tavon Austin for a 32-yard touchdown to start the game. Smith threw a second touchdown to Austin later in the first quarter. In the second, Smith threw his third touchdown, this time a 48-yard pass to Jock Sanders, who caught another touchdown from Smith near the end of the half. Noel Devine ran for 75 yards and a score in the game, as well as Shawne Alston running for 77 yards.  The team as a whole ran for 245 yards on the Bearcat defense.  

DEFENSE

The Mountaineer defense intercepted Bearcats quarterback Zach Collaros twice and kept him out of the end zone for the first time this season. The Bearcats running backs only ran for 60 yards in the game, and the Mountaineers caused two Cincy fumbles.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Mountaineers did not need any field goals but kicker Tyler Bitancourt was 5-for-5 on extra points. Punter Gregg Pugnetti had six punts in the game for a total of 237 yards.  

GAME BALL

The game ball goes to quarterback Geno Smith for throwing four touchdowns and 174 yards.  

NEXT UP

West Virginia will head to Louisville next week to take on the Cardinals  (5-5, 2-3).
