Senior punter currently ranked third nationally

Dan Hutchins’ status as one of the country’s top specialists was confirmed today when the senior was named to Phil Steele’s “Midseason All-America Team.”
Hutchins was a first-team selection at punter. He currently ranks third nationally with a 47.08 average (24 punts for 1,130 yards). Nine of his punts have been downed inside the 20.
His performance this year has helped the Panthers rank first nationally in net punting with a 44.83 average. Pitt is yielding a mere 3.09 yards per punt return.
An early frontrunner for Big East Special Teams Player of the Year, Hutchins leads the conference in every major specialist category, including punting average, field goals (1.67 field goals/game), field goal percentage (tied, 71.4%, 10 of 14), PAT kicking percentage (tied, 100%, 19 of 19) and kick scoring (tied, 8.2 points/game).
The recognition from Phil Steele is the latest honor for the native of Williamsport, Pa., and graduate of Loyalsock Township High. On Monday, Hutchins was named the Big East Special Teams Player of the Week for his production in Pitt’s 45-14 victory at Syracuse. Against the Orange he averaged 50.0 yards on five punts and had two downed inside the 20. Hutchins was also perfect on seven placements, going 6 for 6 on extra points and connecting on his lone field goal attempt (24 yards), totaling nine points on the day.
It was Hutchins’ second weekly Big East honor this year. He was previously honored for his 14-point performance against FIU on Oct. 2.
Pitt (3-3, 1-0 Big East) will host Rutgers (4-2, 1-0) this Saturday at Heinz Field. The contest will have a noon kickoff and be televised by ESPN Regional as the “Big East Network Game of the Week” (WTAE-TV, channel 4, in Pittsburgh).
