Duquesne adds former players Loebig and Dixon to coaching staff

Neil Loebig joins Jerry Schmitt's staff as passing game coordinator and receivers coach; Connor Dixon returns as tight ends coach.

Duquesne University head football coach Jerry Schmitt announced today that former WPIAL and Duquesne standouts Neil Loebig and Connor Dixon have been added to the coaching staff.


Loebig, who will serve as passing game coordinator as well as receivers coach, spent last season as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Lely High School in Naples, Fla. This is the second stint at Duquesne for Loebig, who served on the Dukes coaching staff for five seasons from 2006-10. He coached DU’s quarterbacks from 2006 through 2008 before adding the title of passing game coordinator prior to the 2009 season. He was the offensive coordinator in 2010 prior to moving with his family to Florida. The South Fayette High School product broke 13 of 15 Duquesne passing records as and undergraduate quarterback for Duquesne from 2001-04.


Dixon, who will coach DU’s tight ends, completed his playing career by earning first team All-Northeast Conference honors at receiver last season. Dixon was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers on April 29 and participated in rookie camp before suffering an injury that led to his release in early July. The South Park, Pa. native, who gained a rare sixth year of eligibility the day before the 2011 opener, tied the DU single-season record with 16 touchdown receptions in 2011.


Dixon attended Michigan State as a quarterback before to transferring to Duquesne prior to the 2008 season. He started at QB for the Dukes in 2008 before shoulder injuries forced him to move to receiver. He finished last season with 40 receptions for 792 yards and a school record tying 16 touchdowns. He finished his career with a unique stat line that included 26 touchdown passes thrown and 23 touchdown passes caught.


One of a select group of players at all NCAA levels to throw for over 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns, Loebig led the Dukes to four consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles, (2001-04) and a I-AA Mid-Major National Championship in 2003. He is the only Duquesne four-time first team All-MAAC player and only player in school history to throw for over 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns in four seasons.


DU opens fall camp on Sunday, August 5. The 2012 season opener will be at Old Dominion on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 6:00 p.m.
