Devine, Smith lead Mountaineers to easy win

WVU 49 – UNLV 10
While the schedule makers gave the Mountaineers a bye week last week, UNLV provided WVU with technically another bye week as the Rebels provided little challenge Saturday afternoon. In their final non conference tune-up before Big East play, quarterback Geno Smith threw three touchdown passes, running back Noel Devine rushed for two more and a suffocating Mountaineer defense picked off two passes and did not allow a score until they were ahead 42-0 and held UNLV to under 300 total yards. The offense scored on their first two possessions and never looked back.

GAME FLOW
WVU got the ball first and drove 80 yards on just three plays to take a quick 7-0 lead as Smith found Brad Starks deep on a 38 yard touchdown pass connection. On the next Mountaineer possession, the offense only took four plays to go 64 yards as Devine ran 28 yards for the 14-0 score. By halftime, the score was 35-0.

OFFENSE
On the ground:
Devine carried the ball just three times, but scored twice and ran off most of his yards on just two of the runs, both extended rushes for touchdowns. He finished with 84 yards in the first half and sat out the second half. For UNLV, Tim Cornett led the Rebel rushing attack with 62 yards on 11 carries. The offense also did not turn the ball over.

Through the air: Smith threw three touchdowns and completed 11 passes on 16 attempts and sat after third quarter to play it safe from any injuries in a blowout game. Rebels starter Omar Clayton was pulled at halftime after managing a meager 81 yards on his 12 completions. Caleb Harring threw the only touchdown pass for UNLV, but it was midway through the fourth quarter after the game was well decided.

DEFENSE
It is always easier to play with a lead and the Mountaineer defense went to work for the first time with a 7-0 lead. After a three and out, they had a 14-0 lead and never were in any danger of letting UNLV back into the contest.

SPECIAL TEAMS
No field goal attempts for WVU's Tyler Bitancurt, who was 7 for 7 in extra points.

GAME BALL
Although he only carried the ball three times, Devine scored on two of the carries and finished with 84 yards. He did not even have to play a down in the second half.

NEXT UP
The Mountaineers start their Big East schedule with a home game against the South Florida Bulls at Mountaineer Field on Thursday night.
