Running back Chad Spann added to active roster; team adds back to practice squad

The Steelers have placed rookie linebacker Chris Carter (hamstring) on their Reserve/Injured List, the team announced today.

Carter, the Steelers’ 2011 NFL fifth-round draft pick from Fresno State University, saw action in eight games this season, primarily on special teams. Carter recorded one defensive tackle and one special teams tackle.

Replacing Carter on the active roster will be rookie running back Chad Spann. Spann, an undrafted rookie free agent from the Northern Illinois University, has been on the Steelers’ practice squad since Week 15. Prior to joining the Steelers, Spann spent time with the Indianapolis Colts during the 2011 preseason but was released prior to the start of the season. He then signed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad before being signed by the Steelers.

Replacing Spann’s spot in the practice squad is running back Albert Young. Young, a third-year player, spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to the start of the 2011 season. Young originally signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie free agent out of the University of Iowa. During his two seasons on the active roster, Young accumulated 82 rushing yards.

Spann will wear No. 30 and Young will wear No. 41.
