A Cannon Sampler

Some of the most fun I’ve had over the past few months has been the production of the Ellis Cannon Sports Business Report, presented by the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School.

They air daily on KQV Radio 1410, pittsburghsportsreport.com and elliscannon.com. Here’s a sampling – just from December:

*Why not Pittsburgh? That was the first thought that went through my mind when I heard the news about the State Games of America coming to Hershey/Harrisburg in 2013. When you hear the details, you'll probably agree it would be a good thing for Pittsburgh.

*The college football winners and losers have been decided with final ratings in for the regular season network coverage. The numbers were off; check out the winners and losers.

*An important moment has passed too quietly. Similar to how a printed retraction or correction never seems to undue the original error, word that the U.S. Justice Department was passing on asking the Supreme Court to take a look at a circuit court ruling opened up an old wound: the baseball steroid scandal should have never unfolded as it did. Learn how an illegal search was finally “corrected.”

*Who would have thought a gift from my father 40 years ago would fit into today's Report? Both scenarios involve a helmet, both involve looking like a dork, but one is much more serious than the other. Here’s why being a dork in the NFL may not be such a bad thing.

*The anticipation continues to build for the Winter Classic. However, no matter how hard the NHL tries, there is one category that event cannot win when compared the "Big Chill" at Michigan Stadium.

*Three things went through my head when I learned of Don Meredith’s death, including a nugget about just how bad the ratings once were for Monday Night Football. Hint: Red’s cigar in lyrics and a 1974 Steelers game that shows how far the Steelers—and MNF—have come.

*Just when you thought it wasn't possible to get more hype for the 2011 Bridgestone Winter Classic, we see that Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin will be priming the pump on national television. You will never guess where and how…

*A winter baseball trade involving a market like Pittsburgh? Check out the economic and fan buzz set off when the Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a blockbuster and nabbed former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke.

*With the list of bloated postseason college football bowl games, it only figures Pitt played in the Compass Bowl. Actually, it's the BBVA Compass Bowl. So what is BBVA Compass and what's it doing sponsoring college football bowl games?

*Let’s hope former American Olympic hero and current Buffalo goaltender, Ryan Miller, has learned something from Chad Ocho Cinco. How can these two guys could even be mentioned in the same breath? Easy – cereal.

Josh Bell had not hit a walk-off home run since he was a member of the Altoona Curve in 2015. He changed that Friday with a soaring shot for the left field loonies.

Francisco Cervelli is as passionate about the current state of Venezuela as anybody you'll find. Last month, the Pirates' catcher spoke passionately about the movement, his country's state of affairs and the future of Venezuela.
