Oftentimes it can be just as important to be mentally ready for a sport or activity as it is to be physically ready.

A lot of people reminisce about the “good old days” when they were growing up. They played a variety of sports all year; fall was football and soccer season, winter was basketball and wrestling, and spring was for baseball and lacrosse.

Although every individual’s selection of chosen sports varies, the common theme of differentiation remains.

Wherever you are on your path as a sports parent, it’s good to stop and examine your approach to their activity. Do you pay enough attention? Are you pushing your child a little too hard?

We’ve all heard about (or have seen) the overbearing parent who shouts too loudly at games, bullies the coach to play their child more, and every once in a while gets ejected from the game.

If your child is struggling in sports, what should you do? Should you talk to your child’s coach? Take extra time to practice with him or her? Or just plain let them quit?

Every situation differs, of course, but in general it is best to let your child have his or her own chance to make decisions about sports.

Twelve-year-old Samantha plays soccer almost year round. That means her middle-school season is followed by indoor games and training in the winter, then local recreational leagues in the spring. In the summer, she attends a couple of camps as well.

Her sister Danielle plays basketball with a similar level of commitment.
