Sports Whiz Trivia - January 2010

Unless the Steelers pull of a miracle in January (and stranger things have happened) the ’09 season will likely be filed under “D” for disappointing. Let’s look back on a few seasons past that were, if not disappointing, then somewhat less than supremely satisfying.

1. The team’s first whiff of the postseason came in ’47, their 15th year of existence, when they tied the Eagles for the Eastern Division title. How were ties like that resolved back then.

2. Buddy Parker led the Steelers to a 9-5 record and an appearance in the Playoff Bowl in’62. What in the Wide World of Sports was the Playoff Bowl?

3. Why was the ’68 regular season matchup between the Steelers and Eagles dubbed the “OJ Bowl?”

4. Chuck Noll went 1-13 in his first season with the team. Did they win the first or the last game?

5. What was the only postseason loss for the Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium in the ‘70s?

6. The ’76 Steelers began their quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl by starting the season 1-5. They were greeted for game six at Three Rivers Stadium with a standing ovation. How did they do the rest of the way?

7. There were playoff implications for the Steelers in the Monday Night Football game between the Patriots and Dolphins in December 1980. None of that seemed to matter after what Howard Cosell announced late in the game. What are we talking about?

8. His only appearance of the season came in game 15. He threw for two TDs in a victory that clinched a playoff berth. It was also the final game of his career. Who are we talking about?

9. This linebacker came here two years after Super Bowl XIV and left two years before Super Bowl XXX, playing in more than a few disappointing seasons. Who are we talking about?

10. Bill Cowher went 11-5 his first season with the team (’92), making the playoffs. How did he do in his final season here (’06)?
