Doc's NFL Notebook
By James Santelli

Baltimore Ravens

OT Jonathan Ogden ended his 12-year NFL career on June 12. The 33-year-old Ogden missed five games last season due to a hyperextended big left toe. Ogden made the Pro Bowl 11 times in his twelve seasons in Baltimore, more trips to Honolulu than legends Michael Strahan, Brett Favre, and Warren Sapp, who also retired this past offseason. 25-year-old Adam Terry is expected to fill the spot vacated by Ogden. Terry started 9 games last season.

Cincinnati Bengals

Former Bengals WR Chris Henry was suspended indefinitely by the league on June 17. The former Mountaineer was released by the team in April and at press time was awaiting trial on assault and criminal damaging charges. The 25-year-old Henry was suspended for the first eight games of last season for violating the league's conduct policy, and could face a suspension of at least one season if he is convicted in Hamilton County (OH) Common Pleas Court…Disgruntled WR Chad Johnson participated in a full workout on June 14 for the first time since demanding a trade from the Bengals. Johnson limited himself in drills during the three previous days of the minicamp, complaining of problems in his right ankle, an ankle that was surgically repaired following workouts. The 30-year-old receiver is expected to be fully healed by Bengals training camp at month's end, though he still maintains that if he is not traded, he will sit out this season.

Cleveland Browns

C LeCharles Bentley requested, and was granted, a release by the Browns after a two year Browns career in which he never dressed for a game. The former Pro Bowler suffered a left knee injury in training camp of 2006 four months after signing a six-year, $36 million contract with the Browns. The 28-year-old Bentley practiced with the Browns during their three-day June minicamp, his first time participating in team activities since the injury and subsequent infection…TE Kellen Winslow continues to recover from February surgery on his right knee. Winslow participated in individual workouts and some team drills, his first workout with the Browns since the surgery. The 24-year-old is expected to be in full participation mode when the team's training camp begins later this July.

New England Patriots

While Spygate may not be over, Senator Arlen Specter's involvement in it is. On June 17, Senator Specter announced that he will not call for Congressional hearings on the scandal, but stated that he believes "the NFL should step forward and embrace an independent inquiry," similar to Major League Baseball's Mitchell investigation into steroid use.

Chicago Bears

Bad news for offensive linemen in the NFC North: 3-time Pro Bowl DT Tommie Harris will remain with the Bears through 2012. On June 19, the former Oklahoma Sooner signed a four-year, $40 million extension with the team, making Harris both the highest defensive tackle in NFL history, as well as the highest paid Chicago Bear in team history.

Tennessee Titans

MLB Ryan Fowler is under investigation by the NFL for his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. David Jacobs, a convicted steroids dealer, told the Dallas Morning News that he supplied Fowler with steroids prior to and following the 2006 season, while Fowler was a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The 26-year-old Fowler, who started 14 games for the Titans last season, could be faced with a suspension. When Fowler was asked if could say that he never used steroids, he replied simply, "I can tell you that."

Washington Redskins

Free safety Stuart Schweigert was signed by the team on June 2 to fill a position formerly occupied by the late Sean Taylor. The signing of the 5th-year safety allows the team the option of moving LaRon Landry to strong safety. Schweigert, a Purdue product, spent his first four seasons with the Oakland Raiders, but lost his starting job in Week 12 of last season and was subsequently released by the Raiders.

Houston Texans

The Texans signed OLB Rosevelt Colvin, after being cast off by the Patriots in February. The team hopes to bolster a pass rush that finished 21st in the league last season with 31 sacks. The 30-year-old Colvin recorded only four sacks in the 2007 season, hampered by a foot injury that caused him to miss all of the Patriots playoff run.

New York Giants

Full-time wide receiver and part-time rabble-rouser Plaxico Burress did not practice at the team's mandatory June minicamp, insistent in his demands for a new contract. The former Steeler is projected to earn $3.25 million this season with the defending Super Bowl champs. Though Burress wants a raise before the start of training camp, he insists that he does not want a trade out of New York, telling WIP radio in Philadelphia, "I love the situation I'm in…and I just love everything about me playing football up there."

Oakland Raider

Newly signed wide receiver Javon Walker is expected to be fully recovered from injuries he suffered during a robbery in Las Vegas before the beginning of training camp. The 29-year-old Walker was discovered unconscious by Vegas police near the strip, and was treated for facial injuries as well as a concussion. The former Florida State Seminole managed 26 receptions last season with the Denver Broncos despite missing eight games due to a right knee injury.
