DINGBATS SPORTS BITES
Meet WDVE's Val Porter

Val Porter is the Music Director for WDVE-FM and the News Director for the DVE Morning Show. She's also the new columnist here at PSR. Starting in October, Val will comment on sports, men, women, music and just about everything else under the sun. Before Val became an official member of the Dingbats Sports Bites crew, the Dingbats' Guys has some questions for her.

Who is your favorite male athlete? Is he your favorite because of his talent, his sport, the team he plays for or because of his looks?

Gotta be Mario…for his skills and what he's done for the city.

Who is your favorite female athlete? Is she your favorite because of her talent, her sport or her team?

Come on…Babe Didrikson Zaharias. She killed in track & field and golf. And she's No. 2 on the Sports Illustrated For Women list of the century's greatest sportswomen. Seriously - I don't really have a favorite female athlete, but I think it's awesome that our Pittsburgh Passion won the title this year and that for the first time in its history, three women started in the Indy 500.

What do you like about working with the DVE Morning Show?

It's not really work. It's like sitting around talking with a bunch of people you know.

What do you enjoy most about your Penguins in-game work?

The fact that I love hockey is the best part. And I get to see a little bit of the behind-the-scenes workings of the game.

Any interesting interaction with the fans?

With DVE, some guy had me autograph his chest and I found out that later that day he had it tattooed on. At the Pens' games, one guy who owned a greenhouse brought me a poinsettia during a game. I thought that was nice.

A popular question in interviews is whether guys like Ginger or Maryanne better? So we wanna know, the Professor, the Skipper or Gilligan?

Hmmm…that's a tough one. Probably not the Professor - too uptight. I guess it would be a toss-up between the Skipper and Gilligan. I mean, the Skipper…well, he's the Skipper. Although he couldn't get through a three hour tour without wrecking the boat. And you could probably get dopey Gilligan to do anything you wanted him to do.

Do you think the use of thong bikinis and Speedo swim suits should be strictly monitored at the local wave pools and beaches across the country?

I don't think that thongs or Speedos need to be regulated by law. I'd like to think that human decency and modesty would help to self-regulate the use of either one. And no matter how hot a guy is, he should NEVER wear a Speedo unless he's swimming or diving competitively.
