The PSReport Card
Five Over-dramatized Super Bowl Winners

New York Jets - Super Bowl III

New York Jets 16     Baltimore 7     Miami, FL

New York created advantageous match-ups and took full benefit of the Colts' lack of respect, but Baltimore was a better team except for that day. Colt players played and Colt coaches coached as if losing to the Jets was simply impossible. Make no mistake, New York deserved to win and the impact of AFL besting NFL has made Joe and the Jets legends - but had Baltimore taken the Jets seriously, the AFL's first win would have taken at least one more year.

Oakland Raiders - Super Bowl XI

Oakland 32     Minnesota 14     Pasadena, CA

The Raiders had a roster of stars and future Hall of Famers but the Vikings were only a shell of their former selves. The Purple People Eaters were long in the tooth, Tarkenton couldn't get the ball downfield and the game was in sunny California not sub freezing Metropolitan Stadium. Oakland could have mailed it in. This was a strong Raiders team that dispatched the Steelers on the way to Pasadena, but no Black Horde aficionado should brag about Super Bowl XI.

Pittsburgh Steelers - Super Bowl XIV

Pittsburgh 31     LA Rams 19     Pasadena, CA

The Steeler Nation didn't know it, but the end was at hand. Very few mention this edition of the Black and Gold when talking of great Super Bowl winners and rightfully so. Vince Ferragamo and the Rams were nothing special but they were leading after three quarters. Pittsburgh went in front but LA was driving for a go ahead TD when Lambert intercepted. Franco's late touchdown plunge was a poetic game, set, match for the game and the dynasty. Time had taken its toll.

Chicago Bears - Super Bowl XX

Chicago 46     New England 10     New Orleans, LA

The Super Bowl Shuffle, Ditka, Buddy Ryan, 4-6 Defense, Saturday Night Live skits, Refrigerator Perry, McMahon's headbands, Singletary and Sweetness. A lot of hype for a team with just one Super Bowl victory - and that against the Tony Eason (gasp) led Patriots. The Bears did have a dominating season and clearly were the NFL's best, but New England offered little in the way of resistance. It's safe to say that legendary is too big a tag for these Monsters of the Midway.

Baltimore Ravens - Super Bowl XXXV

Baltimore 34     New York Giants 7     Tampa, FL

Baltimore put together arguably the best defensive single season ever, but they needed a tougher test to be considered special. The Giants weren't it and this Raven victory proved nothing. Beat Montana's 49ers, Lombardi's Packers or Bradshaw's Steelers and the Report Card would be impressed. Pounding on a Giant team not exactly loaded with future All Pro's won't cut it. Baltimore was much too one dimensional and the best of the best would have handled them consistently.
